Vitualisation as an emergency backup
Recently I was working on techniques to backup an existing PC in case of emergency.
Being a web developer it can take up to a week to get a new PC running the way I want it.
Often the time that the system would crash is precisely when you do not need it. For example during a storm a blue flash went past my window and it ruined my motherboard and a few other appliances around the home.
I tried techniques of creating a separate laptop with all of my settings etc however finally I think using virtualisation software to create an emergency system is the go.
Parallels is software used to emulate PC's on a Mac however it also has software Paralells Desktop 4 for Windows and Linux that allow you to create a separate setup.
What is most impressive is that this software is so efficient that it can run from a portable hard drive.
Hence if there was an emergency where a hard drive or motherboard crippled my computer I could actually plug this software into a laptop and actually work on projects using backups.
Developers often use this software to test how their programs work under certain operating systems.
