All-in-one PCs are coming of age

When Apple launched the iMac many pundits confidently predicted the end of the PC box with it's cables and space-consuming habits. Years passed and the iMac was singularly conspicuous as being the only serious entrant into the market. When PC makers did enter the market their products were too dear, too clever and otherwise failed to hit the target market. It seemed that the section of the technology market that had been so successful in producing laptops for years was now struggling to build the same device in a slightly different guise. HP released an outrageously expensive touch screen jobbie that refused to move off the shelves and very few other manufacturers did anything at all.

Now at last we're seeing some real forays into the iMac-like maket with devices that are priced right and don't try to be a dog with too many tricks. Sure, touch screen still seems to be obsessing this market, but at least you can now swallow the price without having to pretend you're ever going to use the touch.

More importantly, these devices are now sporting Windows 7, making this in most cases faster and easier to use than a comparable Apple system and able to cope with all your legacy software.

The all-in-one desktop computer system pictured above is from MSI. It has a 21.5 inch screen, core i5 processor, 2Gb or RAM, 320Gb of hard drive space and should retail for around $1,500-1,600. (We can certainly source them for less than that soplease enquire if you're interested.) It has a touch screen but at that price you can forgive it. Macs start at $1,599 for an i3 version. What's more, if you plug a $80 TV tuner into the MSI it becomes a TV and media centre. Try doing that with an iMac.

Asus also have some very nifty models. Their Eee-PC was a great idea that was copied by every manufacturer and invented the netbook. They segued that idea into an Eee-PC box, a neat little PC the size of a hardback novel, and then the an Eee-PC all-in-one PC. Thankfully they've moved away from the Intel Atom-based PC and are now producing genuine PCs with Intel Core 2 Duo processors.

The Asus PC shown here can be had for about $1,500 with a 2.2Ghz Core 2 Duo and a 500Gb hard drive.

Over at Dell they have all-in-one PCs starting at $999. They're only available as 19" PCs and of course they have touch. I think it shows the idea of the all-in-one PC hasn't fully matured into the minds of all manufacturers that so many are dipping a toe in at the 19inch gimmick ladden end rather than providing people with real PCs. Still, as you can see from our small sample, the idea is taking root and real options to the iMac are now available.
